The Adamson house has quite a history!

It was designed by architect, Stiles Clements of the architectural firm of Morgan, Walls & Clements . Construction began in 1929 and was built for Rhoda Rindge Adamson and her husband, Merritt Huntley Adamson, daughter and son-in-Iaw of Frederick Hastings Rindge and May Knight Rindge who were the last owners of the Malibu Spanish Land Grant.

The Mediterranean and Spanish-Moorish styled two-storey, ten-room house was built of steel-reinforced concrete. Stiles called the house "an outstanding example of modified Mediterranean-style architecture". The house includes a pool, bath house, several fountains, boathouse, extensive gardens, a lath greenhouse, courtyards, raised BBQ area, two outdoor corner fireplaces, along with several indoor fireplaces, and in 1958 an elevator was installed in the two story house for Mrs. Adamson.

The home was first occupied by the Adamsons during the summer of 1930 as a vacation beach cottage. A few years later in 1937 it became the family's permanent home. In 1932, a fire started with the electrical wiring of the garage. Luckily, only one of the bedrooms was badly damaged.

The home has views of the Malibu Lagoon, the Pacific Ocean, and the Malibu pier which was built by the family. The interior and exterior of the house features extensive use of Malibu Potteries tile, a pottery business that was built and owned by the family. One of the most unique uses of tile in the house is the Persian-style tile "rug" complete with fringed ends. The house is also fitted with hand-carved teakwood doors, lead-framed bottle glass windows, wrought-iron filigree fixtures, and hand-painted murals and ceilings.

During World War II the bath house was used by the Coast Guard as a local headquarters to watch out over the Malibu coast. Rhonda Rindge Adamson continued to live in the house until her death in 1962. After her death, her heirs planned on building a deluxe Waikiki-type beach resort on the 13 acre site and preserving the house as an art and history museum. The State of California filed an eminent domain lawsuit in 1966 seeking to tear down the house and turn it into beach parking. The State of California won its eminent domain lawsuit and purchased the property in 1968 for $2.29 million from the Adamson family.

Despite the State's victory, the Malibu Historical Society fought over the next ten years to have the Adamson House preserved. From 1971 to 1982 Norvel Young, the chancellor of Pepperdine University, moved in as part of an effort to maintain the house until it could be properly restored. In 1976, the Malibu Historical Society won victory when Herbert Rhodes, the director of the state's Department of Parks and Recreation overruled staff recommendations to use the land for beach parking and recommended preservation of the property. Sylvia Rindge Adamson Neville, a granddaughter of Frederick Rindge, donated money to help restore the house to its former beauty, with additional funds being raised by the Malibu Historical Society.

In 1982, the Malibu Lagoon Interpretive Association began work converting the garage into a small historic museum and in 1983 the house and the Malibu Lagoon Museum were opened to the public. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and designated as a California Historical Landmark No. 966 in 1989.
